What’s it like releasing an album you thought no one would hear?

You record an album, it gets shelved by the record company, and then years later along comes a label wanting to give it the release it deserved. That’s what happened to The Cheek, whose debut albumLovers’ Quarrel is finally due for release five years after recording. We asked Charlie from the band what that’s like.

“At the time Lovers’ Quarrel was all. It consumed our life and, we believed, summed it up with glossy portraits of girls and louche tales of Doing Nothing. Over time it has become slighter and momentary; a snapshot of us rather than, as we intended, our understanding of the world in pop form. It sounds now, to my ears, brash, nonsensical and too big for its boots, a bottle of cheap whisky about to explode for no reason. It sounds fucking great.”

Lovers’ Quarrel is out on October 28th with the release being marked by a very special one-off launch show at Birthdays in Dalston. There will be no more live shows from The Cheek after this, so make sure you’re there.
